While Caylin Newton is currently the most talked about FCS football quarterback, don’t sleep on Kyle Lauletta. On Saturday, the Richmond quarterback tied a school record, throwing for six touchdown passes in the 68-21 blowout win against Howard. The Bison, received national exposure when they upset UNLV as a 45-point underdog, but hopes of an upset against Richmond were shattered quickly.

Lauletta and the rest of Richmond’s offense made quick work in disorienting the Bison defense. The Spiders scored on seven touchdowns in their first eight drives with Lauletta responsible for five of those touchdowns. Richmond set a school records with most points in a half (48) and most points in a quarter (34). Howard scored their first touchdown of the game with just seconds left in the second quarter to go into half-time trailing 48-7.

In the third-quarter, Richmond came out strong to put the game out of reach even more. Lauletta hit Tyler Wilkins on a 34-yard touchdown pass scoring in less than three minutes to start the half. Running Back, Jay Palmer, added a 1-yard touchdown run on the next drive. Palmer finished the game with 12 carries, 102 yards, and two touchdowns (1 rushing, 1 receiving). Joe Mancuso scored on a 2-yard touchdown run for the Spiders and Newton wrapped up the game completing a 28-yard touchdown pass to Jequez Ezzard.

For Lauletta, this is just another chapter in what has been a stellar season for him so far. The Exton, Pa native completed 89 percent of his passes for 290 yards and continues to lead FCS Football in passing. Lauletta threw two touchdown passes to Porter Abell, including a 70-yard touchdown pass. He also connected with Tyler Wilkins, Cortrelle Simpson, Gordon Collins and Jay Palmer for his other scores. Caylin Newton didn’t fare as well though. He completed only 5 of 17 pass attempts, for 183 yards, a touchdown, and 2 interceptions. Howard got nowhere with their ground attack as the Spiders defense held the Bison to just 91 rushing yards. Newton had 10 carries, for 31 yards, and a touchdown.

Richmond is now 2-1 for the year and will stay at home to host Elon this coming Saturday at 6pm. Howard falls to 1-2 on the season and will also play at home this Saturday against Bethune-Cookman.
