Ken Dorsey FIU

Florida International University has a new assistant athletic director. The Panthers announced on Monday that Ken Dorsey will be joining the athletic department. The former Miami Hurricane quarterback will officially start in his new role in April.Dorsey will be reunited with his former coach Butch Davis at FIU. Davis took over the football program in 2017 and led the Panthers to an 8-5 record. Dorsey played under Davis when he coached the Miami Hurricanes. The former Maxwell Award winner went 38-2 as a starter with the Hurricanes. Dorsey also ranks second on Miami’s all-time passing list with 9,565 yards. The Hurricanes also won the national championship in 2001 with Dorsey under center and Davis calling the shots. Dorsey still holds the record with 86 touchdown passes at Miami in school history.

Butch Davis and Ken Dorsey have a good history together. They won the national title in 2001 and Dorsey played for Davis in the NFL with the Cleveland Browns.

Dorsey also played in the NFL under Butch Davis with the Cleveland Browns. His pro career didn’t go as planned, but the two-time Archie Griffin Award winner still kept a football presence. Before being hired by FIU, Dorsey spent the last five years as quarterbacks coach for the Carolina Panthers. He became an asset in the development of Cam Newton. Dorsey was on the staff when the Panthers reached the Super Bowl in 2016. Newton had this to say about FIU hiring Ken Dorsey.

“He’ll bring a newness and spark to FIU. Not only is he a hard worker, but he has a vibrant killer instinct. He’s a known proven winner over the years.” Cam Newton on Ken Dorsey as the new assistant athletic director at FIU.

While it isn’t a bad thing, it is odd considering Dorsey’s new career path. He was a good coach that had a bright future ahead of him. This move will rekindle a long time relationship with Davis. This is also a good move to help the Panthers move forward in college football. Since forming a football team in 2002, FIU has only had three winning seasons. Davis has them in the right direction by winning eight games in his first season. Adding someone like Dorsey in the school’s front office will help tremendously. He’s a proven winner that knows what a school needs to continue their success.
