A Good Choice: North Texas Promotes Tashard Choice to RB Coach

UNT Football

The North Texas Mean Green promoted former Dallas Cowboy running back, Tashard Choice to Running Backs Coach. Choice served as the Quality Control Coach for the Mean Green this past season. North Texas isn’t the first coaching gig for the former NFL player. Choice was on the Dallas Cowboys coaching staff in 2016, working with the running backs at offseason practices or training camp. In six NFL seasons, Choice rushed for 1,579 yards and 10 touchdowns. He finished his college career at Georgia Tech after transferring from Oklahoma. In 2007, Choice was a first-team All-ACC selection with the Yellowjackets after rushing for 1,379 yards and 10 touchdowns. He finished his college career with 3,465 yards and 28 touchdowns.

North Texas is considered as a “middle of the road” running team. The Mean Green put up 2,280 rushing yards (48th FBS) and 163 yards per game (67th FBS). Getting a little more productive in the ground game will be a top priority to aid with a very strong passing game led behind sophomore, Mason Fine. Choice will work with a young running back unit that is led by Nic Smith. In 2017, the redshirt freshman was the second leading rusher for the Mean Green with 684 yards and 6 touchdowns. Smith rushed for 178 yards in his first career start against Rice and has a lot of upside. Freshman, Evan Johnson will be looked upon to add the most depth at the position. JUCO transfer, Deandre Torrey, should make this a solid running back unit.

North Texas finished the season at 9-5 and went 7-1 in Conference USA play, losing to champions, FAU in both the regular season and the C-USA Championship game. The Mean Green were invited to the RL Carriers New Orleans Bowl where they lost 50-30 to Troy. There’s a lot of positives with this team as they look to build off a solid 2017 campaign.
