Caylin Newton, Brother of Cam Newton Helps Howard Upset UNLV

When Howard entered Sam Boyd Stadium on Saturday, not much was expected of the team. After all, they were a 45-point underdog against the UNLV Rebels. But this is college football. This is where we root for the underdogs. Where we see the little guys step up and make history. No team has ever defeated an NCAA FBS football opponent with that large of a spread. Well, until yesterday. Howard defeated UNLV 43-40 in what is now the biggest upset in college football history. Not by prestige though. Appalachian State still holds that, but Howard now has beaten the odds by the largest margin. The Bison also may have had the best secret weapon, but that’s no longer a secret.

Say Hello to Caylin Newton:

Not many people knew about Caylin Newton until yesterday. Newton, is the younger brother of NFL All-Pro quarterback, Cam Newton. The 5-11, 185lb. freshman out of Grady High School in Atlanta, GA shocked the college football world on Saturday. In his NCAA football debut, the dual-threat quarterback led Howard’s fast paced offense. Newton was composed from the start of the game. He scored on a 52-yard touchdown run on the opening drive for the Bison. Newton finished the day with 330 yards of total offense.

After the opening drive, UNLV answered with two field goals, but Newton would strike again. He connected with receiver Kyle Anthony for a 1-yard touchdown pass. After UNLV responded with their third field goal and trailing 14-9, the Bison defense got into the action. Linebacker Devin Rollins scored on a 75-yard fumble recovery and gave Howard a 21-9 lead over UNLV. After the costly turnover, it looked as if the Rebels were finding their groove by scoring 10 unanswered points. Howard held a 2-point lead going into the half 21-19.

Now, The Game Gets Really Exciting:

The Rebels started strong in the second half when Devon Boyd hit Armani Rogers for a 25-yard touchdown pass. From there, it looked like UNLV was going to pull away for good after a Charles Williams touchdown run made it a 33-21 game. Howard wasn’t finished yet though. Anthony Philyaw capped a 14-play, 75-yard drive, with a 3-yard touchdown run. The senior running back would strike again early in the fourth quarter with an 11-yard touchdown run. Newton converted the 2-point conversion and Howard regained a 36-33 lead.

With a little over ten minutes left in the fourth quarter, UNLV’s Lexington Thomas scored on a 3-yard touchdown run giving the lead back to the Rebels, 40-36. Anthony Philyaw scored again following a 42-yard pass from Newton. UNLV would get three more possessions to try to prevent the unthinkable. In those drives, the Rebels punted, fumbled, and failed to score in the last 13 seconds of the game. Former Virginia coach, Mike London’s Howard team made college football history.

Caylin Newton went 15-26, 140 yards, an interception, and a touchdown pass. On the ground, he had 21 carries for 190 yards and 2 touchdowns. It was that performance that made him Player of the Game. UNLV netted 564 yards of total offense in the losing effort. Lexington Thomas led the Rebels offense with 151 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns. For Newton, this is a strong start for his college football career. Howard will try to play spoiler once again this coming week against the Ohio Bobcats. Game-time is scheduled for 3:30 with Howard on the road again.
