Buffalo Bills add RB depth with Chris Ivory signing

Chris Ivory Buffalo Bills

The Buffalo Bills have reached a two-year deal with RB Chris Ivory. The contract is worth up to $6 million, with $3.25 million in  guaranteed salary. The Bills have been active so far in this year’s NFL free agency period. They have already signed Vontae Davis to beef up the secondary. With signing Chris Ivory, Buffalo hopes to add some firepower to their ground game. The Jacksonville Jaguars cut Ivory last month due to the emergence of Leonard Fournette. The 30-year old Ivory played in 14 games last season with 3 starts. In that limited time, he rushed for 382 yards and a touchdown. He also had 175 yards on 21 receptions, making him a good, versatile back.

This is another solid pickup for Buffalo. Ivory’s role won’t be the featured back. LeSean McCoy will continue to handle those duties. Last season, Shady rushed for 1,138 yards on 287 carries. The role that the Bills hope that Ivory will play is to complement McCoy. Buffalo likes to run and does a very good job of doing so. Having an athletic quarterback like Tyrod Taylor helps in that department too. The Bills also like to use their running backs in the passing game. Ivory has the ability to fit in just fine there as well. With Mike Tolbert and Travaris Cadet free agents, locking up Ivory will help the Bills focus on other positions in free agency and the NFL Draft.

Ivory has played eight years in the NFL with his three years with the New York Jets being the most productive. In 2015, he had a breakout year with 1,070 yards and 7 touchdowns. He also led the AFC in rushing that year and was selected to the Pro Bowl. In his three-year span in New York, Ivory rushed for 2,724 yards and 16 touchdowns in 46 games.

While he doesn’t seem to be a top running back anymore, Chris Ivory will give the Bills much-needed depth on the ground. He will show flashes of greatness and will also take some of the burden off McCoy. The Bills are making some tweaks to make a deeper run in the playoffs. Adding depth will certainly help them do that. With two key signings already, don’t look for the Buffalo Bills to be done just yet.
