Pat White will be a great hire for the Alcorn State Braves Football Staff

Pat White Alcorn State Football

Former WVU Mountaineer and NFL quarterback Pat White is getting back into the football life. The Alcorn State Braves hired White as their new quarterback coach. Garrett Kroeger of the Natchez Democrat first reported the news. This will be the first coaching gig for the 32-year-old White.

A native of Daphne, Alabama, White played four years of NCAA football with the West Virginia Mountaineers. In 49 career games, he accumulated 10,529 total yards of offense. He won 34 games for the Mountaineers including two BCS Bowls. White split playing time as a true freshman before solidifying the starting spot in the seventh game. He never looked back. The Freshman All-American led the Mountaineers to a 38-35 victory over the Georgia Bulldogs in the Sugar Bowl.

The most memorable game of Pat White’s career came on January 2, 2008, in the Fiesta Bowl. The Mountaineers were coming off a loss to rival Pitt which would have landed them in the National Championship game. To make matters worse, head coach Rich Rodriguez bolted for Michigan from West Virginia a few weeks before the game. With team morale down due to hard luck, White rallied the troops and put the weight of the team on his shoulders. White threw for 176 yards and rushed for another 150 yards in that game as the Mountaineers defeated the Oklahoma Sooners 48-28 in an amazing upset. His performance caused him to be named the Fiesta Bowl MVP.

The Miami Dolphins drafted White in the second-round of the 2009 NFL Draft. The former Heisman Trophy finalist also played for the Washington Redskins and the Edmonton Eskimos in the CFL. The Anaheim Angels drafted White in the fourth round of the MLB Draft. His true passion was football though and decided to pass up the offer.

Hiring Pat White is huge for the Alcorn State Braves. He’s a proven leader and is very intelligent. He can teach younger players how to effectively read defenses and what to do in certain situations. White will dedicate himself to the development of the players under his command. Quarterbacks will gain a lot of knowledge under White and he will strive to get the best out of anyone playing under him.

Alcorn State finished 7-5 last (5-2 SWAC) season and is rebuilding on offense. Standouts DeLance Turner and Lenorris Footman are gone. Noah Johnson will take over under center for Footman. The junior possesses a lot of features that White did as a college quarterback so there should be a solid connection between the two. Pat White played his last collegiate football game against an ACC opponent (North Carolina) and will debut in his coaching career against another ACC opponent in Georgia Tech on September 1st to start the 2018 college football season.
